Draft Horses
"Draft" or "heavy" horses have long held a place in the history of the world. Over the centuries many countries have utilized the "cold blood" group of horses for various types of work as civilizations grew. One of the draft horses many attributes are their ability to exert great strength for shorter distances.  Examples of the draft horses' tremendous working skills throughout the building of many nations include: agricultural, mining, canal work, lumbering, funeral wagons, gun horses drawing cannons, tram-horses and of course as mighty war horses, many of whom are depicted in several renaissance paintings.

Percheron
Among the draft horses, the Percheron is one of the most popular breeds, especially in the United States. Known for a reliable and docile personality, the Percheron is often sought after in modern times as a companion horse. The breed is also becoming a top choice for those interested in dressage and trail riding.

The Percheron originated in the Perche region in Normandy, France. Often thought to be one of the most elegant of the heavy horses, its principal bloodlines are dominated by Arabian blood. French breeders, including Robert Count of Rotrou, imported eastern horses after the first crusade in 1096-1099. Two notable Arabian crosses were Godlphin and Gallipoly; Gallipoly sired the most famous Percheron stallion, Jean le Blanc, foaled in 1830 at Mauves-sur-Huisne.

By the 19th century, variations on size were popular and determined by the public. With in the span of 1880-1920 the demand and popularity took the Percheron to many countries across the world including:  North and South America, Australia and South Africa. Recorded accounts state that 5,000 stallions and 2,500 mares were imported into the U.S. during the 1880's. Registration by 1910 had shown an increased number that sky rocketed to 31,900.

A probable reason for the Percherons' high demand could be a unique trait relating back to there Arab bloodline. When comparing it to other draft horse breeds, the Percheron has an uncanny ability to adapt to different climates more easily due to their desert ancestory bloodlines. Percherons are also one of the most desirable when considering cross breeding with produce or especially competition stock.
