Mare: Adult female horse
Broodmare: Mare used for breeding
Filly: Young female horse

Mare behavior is considered easier to handle than a stallion (male adult horse). Mares have a reputation (sometimes undeservedly) of being cranky or unwilling to obey commands, especially when they come in season (ready to breed/mate). Many people feel however, that mares are known for trying very hard for their riders. Mares are used in every equestrian sport. Bedouins desired mares on their raids because stallions would nicker to the opposing camps horses, where as mares would stay quiet.

LeSanSha Percherons bought their first mare in 1990 with the idea of breeding her and perhaps having a couple colts to show and sell.  Over the years there have been quite a few horses coming and going from our equine family. We now have eight beautiful mares both Percheron and gaited.  We have primarily bred Percherons but in recent years have purchased some homozygous gaited mares to start crossing with our drafts, great for dressage and sporting.

(Homozygous:  simply stated –pure bred/DNA guaranteed for color or trait)
